Summer Reading--New Shorter Assignment for Late Starters!

Hello again, CMS students, parents and friends! Already, the summer is almost over!

I am so proud of all the reading you students have been doing. Several students have completed their assignments on the blog and several others have emailed me about doing their assignments in other ways. I want to offer a little extra incentive to those of you who have done the WHOLE summer reading assignment of 10-15 responses and offer a little motivator to those of you who have not quite gotten started yet!

So, for those of you who have completed or will complete the 10-15 responses, I offer not only an Ice Cream Social, but also, lunch with the world famous (well sort of famous in Athens) Mrs. Hinger to discuss the awesome books you have been reading this summer! And here comes the good part....to those of you who have just gotten started, or have not started at all, I offer an Ice Cream Social if you will post or write at least 2 (or 3 if you are reading 3 books) 100-150 word responses about the books you have read (one for each book). Make sure in the responses you tell us what you like or disliked about the book and why (do not just write a summary. That is just downright boring).

You can respond to this post or look back at the previous post to read what your friends have been writing about all the awesome books they have been reading.

On another note, I FINALLY had a chance to read the Hunger Games series this summer! IT IS SOOOO GOOD! I can't wait for the next book to come out this fall!

See you in a few weeks! Feel free to email me or visit the CMS Media Center Website if you have any questions in the meantime hingers@clarke.k12.ga.us

While they are swimming they are attacked by killer whales. While trying to save Kallik and fight off the whales Nisa is killed.

His mother also tells him to be more carefull and trie not to get himself killed. Tobi is Toklo's brother and is a pretty big wimp. He is always sick and Toklo's mom has to take care of him. The thirde main bear is named Lusa. She is a black bear and lives in a zoo. She has a brother, a mother, and a father. Her brothers name is Yogi and they like to climb trees. They also like to be admired by tourists of the zoo.

Tycho Jenkins - Seekers: the quest begins
What is really liked about this part of the book was that each of the three bears going on the journey to walrus rock has a separate chapter to talk about their individual journey’s until they meet up in there trek. Lusa is a black bear that lives in a zoo. I think it is amazing all the things that she can imagine doing. Toklo is a grizzly bear trapped in between mountains and has to eat dandelions and grain. I like the way that he takes charge in finding the grain for his family ,but I don’t like the way that he feels about his brother Tobi: a useless burden that does nothing but sleep and look sad. Kallik has just lost her mother & brother who she sets out to find

Tycho Jenkins- Seekers :the quest begins
Toklo and his m other Oka, his mother are going into the mountains. During the hard journey up Tobi dies because there is no deep soil the cover him up with sticks and dirt. I thought is was weird how Tobi was always sick from the start. Kallik has got to land and is surprised to find what green looks like. Imagine mot knowing what color green was. She does not like only grass and berries to eat, would you? Lusa’s mother is sick and the “flat faces “ (us) have taken here away. I wouldn’t like to be in a place knowing someone else was was very sick and be trapped knowing there is no way to help.

The book I have just started reading is called "Dragon's Egg
By Sarah L. Thomson.
The book starts out well by introducing our main character Mella and her family.
The book draws you in with totally absurd ideas that seem perfectly normal to them; for example, they have a livestock of dragons that seem to be the equivalent of today's chickens. The setting so far is the Inn that Mella (and family) run and the farm around the inn. Where I left off Sarah (the writer) had just set a sense of mystery with the character know to them as "The Stranger"
I'll report more soon!!

If you don’t know already I’m reading the book "Dragon's Egg" by Sarah Thomson.
Mella has stumbled upon a cave on her way to pick up some herbs, smoke is coming out of it and she decides to investigate. At this time the author is pulling you closer and closer, building your curiosity with every word. The writer really did a great job on this part and I give a thumb up to the chapters I have read so far.
The only thing that bothered me in this chapter is that what Mella brought home from that cave is thought to be a stone when it is obvious that it is something more.
(Hint, Hint). (Whispering)It's what the book is named after.
After I read that she thought it was just a stone that changes colors randomly, I'll say it again, "That changes colors randomly". DUUUHHH!
Reporting Shortly,

The book I am reading is called "Dragon's Egg" By Sarah Thomson. I forgot to mention in my last reading that Mella, when she first gets the egg, is obsessed with it thinking to herself "Its mine! It's mine!" in a way similar to the character Gollum from J.R.R.
Tolkien's, Lord Of The Rings.
In the next chapter when Mella and Roger to hatch the egg, they are not the best of friends, Mella is even hostile to Roger when they talk about The Egg. Though slowly through their journey, their relationship grows by simply traveling together. Another thing I liked is how a layer of trust encrusts them when the outlaw Alain captures them and holds roger for ransom. This is something I liked and disliked. What I disliked was that it was so utterly obvious that they would escape, what I liked was the expert writing to make it seem so real and desperate.
Reporting again soon,
~Oliver

Tycho Jenkins-Marly and Me

This is about pages 1- 29 of the book; In this first three chapters, John and Jenny, a man and his wife, get Marly, who is fast growing puppy. Marly is Labrador retriever and his tail is like an otter’s. John finds out that when the more of his hand he puts on Marly’s head the faster his tail goes. He also leaves landmines all around them, and John and Jenny have to pick them up every day with a shovel.

Right now, what I like about Marly is that he is active and unique. I like that at his first day at their house, Marly kept whining from his bed in the garage until John took him into his room for his first night. I liked that Marly was so persistent at getting attention.

Conn beat him up after that. Nevery figures that when he gets home. This is a good book and I will continue talking to you about it!

The book that I am reading is called No Small Thing. The last time I read the book was June 20, 2010. The pages I read were 1-24. My reaction to the book was good so I kept reading. What I like about this book so far is that it introduces the characters and what they are like. I like it because it is showing how it all starts. Another reason I like it is because they talk about getting the horse. The author describes the horse and you feel it is right there in front of you. When they were taking the horse to the barn, a dog chased Smokey while their little sister Queenie was on it. It broke her collarbone. Because of this, Smokey the horse started to run and she fell off. When they got home, her mom took her to the hospital immediately. I like this part because the mom helped her as best as she could. This is how the book starts.

The last time I read the book was July 6, 2010. The pages I read were 107-118. My reaction to the test is that this book is a good book and one that I can relate to. The one character that I love the most is Queenie. She is a girl of many colors. She is an optimist at all times throughout the book. She can always find the good. She is different than most people, she dances around in public. When she broke her collarbone earlier in the book, she did not cry. She was very mature about it. Queenie is kind to her siblings and her mother. She loves the pony that her siblings got. She cares for it and comforts it. She is a girl anyone could love. Even though she is the youngest of the family, she is the most fair.

I read the chapter Christmastime Magic in the book No Small Thing. The pages I read were 119-142. The chapter was great. It was before Christmas and it made you feel like a regular family. What I liked about this chapter was how their poor family got through with five dollars on buying a beautiful Christmas tree. The reason why is during Christmas you like Christmas trees but this family can’t get one every year. This year the family got a little money to buy a tree. Another reason I like the chapter is that they got their horse, Smokey, to pull the tree all the way back to the house. It was very smart of them to have Smokey pull the tree through town. They rode the tree down through the town and it was a beautiful sight to see. So those are some of the reasons why I like this chapter.

The pages I read were 142-160. The date I read this was 7/11/2010. My reaction to the text was great. I wanted to keep reading the book until I fell asleep. The setting of this chapter was going to the barn to put Smokey in the barn, the family’s house and the city. On the road Nathaniel, the main character, meets up with the love of his life, Cheryl Hanson. Nat was taking Smokey to the barn when Cheryl came. She wanted to come so together they walked Smokey to the barn. While they were walking to the barn Cheryl got to ride Smokey. When they got to the barn, they brushed Smokey and combed him too. Nat showed Cheryl the other horses in the barn. The next thing Nat knew he was kissing her right in the middle of the barn. He took her home then he went home and saw the tree. Then he went to bed.

The in the end of the book No Small Thing, things keep falling apart for the family. The date I last read the book was on 7/15/2010. The book ended great, everything was good for the family. What I like about this book was their family cared so much about the horse even though they had so little money. A lor of things happened because of their horse Smokey. He changed their lives and that's why I like this book so much. Another reason why I like this book is when the fire happened in the barn, their mom called their schools to let them out early even though their mom has only seen the horse twice, she knew how much they loved them. When they got home after the fire, they had to move. So the next day, they had to sell Smokey but when the people came to take him away Nathaniel ran away with him into the woods. He did it because he loved him so much. His mom realized how much Nat loved Smokey so when they came home, she let him keep the horse. They still had to move but their life was starting to improve.

Savvy, by Ingrid Law.
I date I last read the book was July 20, 2010, pages 1-54. When I started the book, I started to like it instantly. It's a great book to read. The plot of this book is about a girl named Mississippi having her thirteenth birthday and getting her savvy. A savvy is a power that can do anything, create hurricanes, cause electricity, or move mountains. Even in pages 1-54 don't tell what her savvy is. She thinks she knows what it is because she woke up her sister and her brother's almost dead turtle. A couple days before Mibs birthday, her dad got into a crash so she doesn't know what she is going to do about him, her mom and her brother. While she was at her party, one of her friend's sister and their friends had a tattoo and it made her faint. That's the book so far.

My first reaction when I started reading this section of the book, I felt great like I was there with them. The setting of this part of the book was on a bus. When Mibs woke up, everyone was yelling and screaming and she could not concentrate. She wanted to go see her dad so she and some of her friends and siblings sneaked on a bus. Then they got caught by the driver for sneaking on the bus. They tried to tell him that their dad needed their help. So he let them go. So the setting is on a bus but Mibs finds out that she has to make a couple stops on the way that kind of slows things down a bit for her.

Nicolina Boza: The Year the Swallows Came Early, July 20-24, pages 1-70. Groovy watched her day get taken away in a police car. I can't imagine how she felt. Luckily, she has Frankie to talk to. I think Frankie is going to be a big help throughout the book. Groovy wants to know why her dad is gone, but her mom is at work and can't talk. I like how Frankie and Groovy love to cook because my mom loves to cook, and sometimes I have to help. I think it is strange that Frankie and Luis's parents are gone. I can't even imagine what my house would be like if my parents weren't there. Probably my little brother would go crazy. My older brothers and sister would boss me around. Their parents send letters, but Frankie doesn't even want to read them. I'm not sure what I think of Mr. Tom, yet, but I don't think I'm going to like his character.

John and Jenny have finally had their baby. They originally got a luxury room for when Jenny had the baby. The room had a Whirlpool bath and a large fold out couch for the dad. They got Marly to smell the blanket of the baby , so as to let him know of their new guest. Marly takes it very well and has a great fondness for patrick’s diapers it seems. They are very happy with how to dog behaves toward Patrick. They usually find him sleeping in his nursery beside the crib.

Grace Mauldin - 6th grade - Savvy. July 25, 2010, pages 104-154. The is the main part of the book. In this section of the book, the kids, Lester and Lill are on their way to drop Lill off at the restaurant and to get a bite to eat. On the way through an alley to get there, they found a man lying on the side of the road. Mibs stopped at the man on the road but only Will Junior stopped with her. She thought in her head that if her savvy was waking up things and people that she could wake this man up with a gentle touch. She tried it, it didn't work. Then she heard a voice inside her head that said "leave me so I can rot." She kept on trying but nothing happened. She soon realized that she couldn't wake up her Pappa and she'd come all this way for nothing.

Grace Mauldin - 6th grade, Savvy. July 29, 2010, pages 155-202. This is a part of the book you really want to read because they get to the restaurant and you get to read what happens to them. The main part of the setting here is in the restaurant. Instead of waking up people, Mibs finds out that she can read minds. When she told her brother Fish to think of a hard number, she got it right by drawing an ink smiley face on his hand. Bobbie, Will Junior's sister, found out then went to go tell Will. Ozzie, the manager, caught them in the employees only room. He told them that Lill was about to get fired. When she did, she got her paycheck and ran with burgers and pie all the way to the bus. Mibs gave the poor man her burger and her flower off her dress. The kids checked into a motel and are going to Saline in the morning.

In this part of the book all of the kids and the adults piled in the motel. When they got to the motel, the girls got into one room and the boys got into another. Lill made them call their parents but the tricked her by calling Fish instead. Lill talked with "Will's mom" or Bobbie on the phone. After Lill left to go to the store, they turned on the t.v. and saw the news about them. When Lill got back she had a trunk load of food and clothes. She got bathing suits for everyone. So five minutes later, they were all at the pool. Will pulled Mibs in and then kissed her. When they got back to the rooms, Sampson was sound asleep under the table. After that they went to sleep. The next morning, they hit the road to Saline Hope.

Josh and Jenny have taken a trip to Ireland. As the country is mainly Catholic, Every place they go seems to have a picture of the pope, or Virgin Mary. They leave Marly in the care of one of john’s co-workers. When they come home it is not a pretty sight. Marly did no behave well and did a few things to the dog sitter’s purse, shoes and ran right into traffic. I would be very upset with my dog if he did that. For Jenney’s birthday john got her a gold necklace. She went to take a nap and when she woke up, it was gone. Marly had eaten it. Later he pooped it out and is was even shinier than before.

The characters in this book are Naruto, Shikamaru, Rock Lee, Tsunade, Guy, Kiba, Akamaru, Temari, Kankuro, Gaara, Sasuke, Ukon, Sakon, Jirobo, Tayuya, Kidomaru, Kimimaru, Orochimaru and Kabuto. I liked the part when Guy ran into the hospital to see if Lee was all right. He asked to Tsunade if the operation was a success, and it was. The part I disliked was when Kimimaru comes in. That's because he's so cruel and mercyless.

Darkwing by Kenneth Oppel

The story is about a young chiropter named Dusk. Dusk is a boy who is very distinct from the other characters in the book as he has two claws instead of three, and unlike the others, he has no fur on his sails (wings). He also has the ability to see in the dark using his hunting clicks (echolocation). His chest is larger and stronger than others and weak back legs. This is not very helpful for climbing, but it enables him to glide downward faster. Dusk is disliked by most of the other characters by how he looks and because he sometimes takes others food without meaning to do so. His father, Icaron, is the leader of his colony. His father looks almost nothing like Dusk. Dusk has a sister named Sylph and she is the only other young chiropter who will be Dusk’s friend.

Sylph is a normal chiropter – three claws, fur on her sails, etc. The reason she’s nice to dusk is, well, she’s his sister…they’re friends and in their family, they were the closest to each other. She is a pretty good hunter, and out of all the young chiropters, she’s the come the closest to catching a sphinx moth as these moths are known for being big and fast. The only other young chiropter to do so is Dusk. This feat makes her father proud of both Sylph and Dusk (he has 16 other children). When Dusk discovers his echolocation capability, she is the only one Dusk tells about it. Slyph’s echolocation can only range approximately six inches in front of her. This reminds me of a passage in Stellaluna when she takes her brother birds out for a flight at night and they freak out trying to fly in the dark. Slyph is upset when Dusk tells her he can see across the clearing that is their home and she is barely able to see the few buzzing insects nearby.

Carnassial is a felid, a type of wild cat from long ago. When you first meet him, he and Panthera are hunting for Sarian eggs. Sarians are great monsters that were attacking the beasts, so all the beasts created a pact to destroy the Sarian species. Back in this time, the beasts did not eat meat; they ate insects, grubs, and plants. But, Carnassial ate the egg embryos and developed a taste for meat. After Carnassial kills and eats a “fellow beast”, he gets thrown out of his pack. Soon, other felids come to him and tell him their secret, that they craved meat as well. They form a pack with Carnassial as leader. They search for a good home to practice hunting. They soon find the perfect place, Dusk’s island! Twice a day, at certain tides, there is a certain sand bridge that leads to the island. Carnassial and his pack use this bridge to get to the island. Thus, they attack the chiropters forcing Dusk and his colony to seek a new home.

The Sariens are great monsters who to me seem a bit like dragons except that the winged ones are vegetarians, and they are no threat. But, the ground ones are carnivorus and can climb trees. When he beasts form the pack to destroy the Sariens, all they had to do was destroy the Sariens’ nests because the older Sariens developed a disease that ate their flesh. Dusk believes that the Sariens are from long ago, but that is not true. Before Carnassial was thrown out of his pack, Carnassial and Panthera destroy the last nest of Sariens. The reason Dusk believes that the Sariens are from long ago is because the adult chiropters tell these tales to protect their young from the horrors of these monsters. However, when a dying adult Sarien falls into the middle of their clearing, Dusk and all the other youths were finally told the truth about the Sariens, and he discovers something strange. The Sariens’ wings were very much like his own.

In this book, they have an animal called a Diatryma. It seems to be related to a Dodo bird. Both the Diatryma and the Dodo bird are flightless birds, but with one huge difference. The Diatryma is carnivorus. The Dodo birds are pescivores and herbivores like the rest of the beasts at this time. In this book, there is a Diatryma who has a broken leg, and she cannot fend for herself. In exchange for food, she guards a colony of tree runners. The Diatryma scares off the tree runners predators in exchange for the other creatures which the tree runners lure in by a false friendship. The tree runners would throw a feast for these animals with berries that make them unconsciousness then the Diatryma would come in and devour them. Dusk and his colony barely avoid the Diatyma, but in the end, most of them survive. This is just one of the trials that Dusk and his colony must endure in this book.

It took a long time for Groovy's mom to tell her why her dad is in jail. I think it a long time because she doesn't really want to tell Groovy, but Groovy has the right to know. I feel sorry for Groovy. She loved her dad so much and had a lot of memories with him. I don't think my dad would ever take money that belonged to me and gamble with it. Number one, he would never gamble. Number two, he is way too careful with his money. I also feel sorry for Frankie. I can't believe his mother left him two years ago to go on a fishing trip and never came back. He never reads the letters she sends. I would read them to figure out when she is coming back and where she is. I can't believe his mother showed up after all that time.

Margaret just moved to a new home in New Jersey. I feel sorry for her. I wouldn't want to move right now. It would be scary. Margaret makes a new friend right away, Nancy Wheeler. I think she's a big show off. I think it's funny how Nancy practices kissing with a pillow. I don't even think that can be considered practicing. I think it's cool how her Grandma surprised her in the middle of the night. My Abuelo did that a lot, and I loved it. It seems that Margaret's Grandma spoils her. Margaret got to join a secret club. I think she's lucky because she's new. The secret club is kind of wierd because they talk about girly things me and my friends don't even talk about. I think the book is going to be good, but I wouldn't want to be the new kid. I think it would be scary to be new.

Margaret has a conversation with Mr. Benedict about religion. I am Catholic and always have been so I don't have to choose my religion. I know I wouldn't want to talk about my personal life with my teacher. Poor Mr. Benedict, the peep trick the class played on him wasn't nice but was still funny. So then he moved their seats around which was pretty smart. then the class didn't want to put their names on the test, but he still figured out whose was whose. Margaret rode a bus to see her Grandma. That was brave. I haven't done that before. Then she goes to the temple with her grandma. I bet that was super scary. Then when she gets back, she goes to church with Janie. I know it felt weird when I went to a different church with my friend. A square dance? Really? I hope Clarke Middle doesn't do that.

And now for the dramatic conclusion of “the review of dragons egg part 1/2 !!!!!”
Well one of the things that bugged me this time I was reading, is that Roger did not tell Mella that he was a prince just because she never asked. Where are these people from?!?
I’m sorry if I made that point already but I think it’s unrealistic.
Well Mella and Roger find their way to a cave that evidently leads to the place they want to go, (it seems like if it did not lead there after taking so many pages going up the stairs to it, It would be a very BORING book!!)
Well even though I make it look pretty obvious, it is pretty intriguing when they go up.
Stay tuned for my last report on this book!

Now for the final report of “DRAGONS EGG”!!!
So after they find the crack in the wall that proves an entrance to the dragon’s hatching place, (There always seems to be a entrance somehow after a big setup) Mella and Roger Make peace with the dragons, I can BELIEVE how much of a cliché this is!! Someone PLEASE!! Come out with a sad book where nothing goes right just so I can it read after this one!!! Well I guess I can’t complain I couldn’t have done a better job.
Well the dramatic conclusion is not that dramatic, everything ends well.
And they both go back home.
My final review overall was that it was a cliché but a very good cliché that could at most make your heart beat faster.

Sandra Evans, 6 Grade: Warriors: Into the Wild
I’ve already read this book before many times but I wanted to read the first book in my favorite series for my “choice book.” I’ve already read the whole book and a lot of different things happen. In the first few chapters, there are only 5 characters. Rusty, the main character (his name is later changed to Firepaw), Smudge, Rusty’s best friend, Graypaw, he also becomes Firepaw’s closest friend in the clan. Lionheart, Graypaw’s mentor. And Bluestar, the ThunderClan leader. Firepaw meets many more cats later but these are main. Rusty is invited to join ThunderClan and he has to make a difficult decision; to stay in the warmth of a house and always have food to fill his belly, or go live freely, running through the forest… what I liked about this book was it was exiting but sad in many ways. I didn’t dislike anything about this book either. It’s a great book and I recommend it.

Sandra Evans: Seekers: the Quest Begins
The book has three main bears. Kallik, a polar bear that lives with her mother Nisa, and her brother Taqqiq. Nisa enjoys to teach them about the "Ice Spirits" their ancestors. There is a grizzly cub named Toklo, who lives with his mother, Oka, and his sick brother, who later dies, Tobi. He thinks Oka doesn't love him and only cares about Tobi. And theres Lusa. She lives at a zoo which the bears call "the Bear Bowl." She lives with her mother, Ashia, her father, King, and her best friend whos a little older then her, Yogi. When Oka is captured and brought to the zoo, she makes friends with her and learns about Toklo. She wants to find him for Oka. Kallik's mother dies trying to save her from two killer whales. She loses Taqqiq during the commotion and thinks he would be at the place where all the white bears gather to find food...

The third book I have started to read is another classic version of a king Arthur story. Starting out they had a mildly entertaining argument between a queen and her prince. Personally I thought the queen’s actions and emotions were pretty redundant.
What I really liked about the start is that it carries the story from the prince who is traveling with the “bad guys” to the court of King Arthur.
As you later learn, the queen you meet at the beginning is going to try to overthrow Arthur and his kingdom that she believes she has the right to own. Further still we find that she is the daughter of the last king, so her son Gawaine is supposed to take the throne.
I really like the beginning of this book and I had to try really hard to break away and write this, reporting soon,

What I have been noticing that I am beginning to respect and like
In Yonel’s “Sword of the Rightful King” is her great and unique skill in writing.
Such as when she describes a individuals conversations to “go off track and into the woods.” Another thing that I like is that she does not work as hard to put our minds into the setting, but instead acts as if it is perfectly normal and more realistic.
What I enjoy about the characters is that they have different personalities than what you would expect, like Merlin is a deceiving liar of sorts, but he does so only for the good of his home.

Grace Mauldin - 6th grade. The Golly Whopper Games, by Jody Feldman. August 3, 2010. In the first three chapters, the author tells you what the character likes to do. This book starts out with Gill Gibson entering himself into the Golly Whopper games. He's trying to be one of the first 4500 in line to get a ticket, but he has no luck. His number is in the 5000s. When he gets home, his mother is crying. The next thing you know the newspaper is in the trash. He takes a peek at the newspapper. His father has been arrested for attempted theft. At school, everyone game him a hard time because of what his dad did. The next year at the games, he got nearly the same number. So he started running up the line and fell. Someone with a first aid kit came and helped his arm.

Grace Mauldin -6th grade. The Gollywhooper Games by Jody Feldman. August 4, 2010. This time in the book is very exciting for Gil and very important too. Gil meets a new friend named Bianca the day before the Golly Whopper games start. When they were looking at the TV Land camers, Gil spots one of his friends, Mr. Golliwop. Mr. Golliwop was the one who started the company and who also started the Golly Whopper games. After he talked to him, Gil took a nap. Frankie, a friend of his woke him up. That night, Gill, his parents and Bianca all slept near each other while waiting in line. Gil didn't fall asleep until 2 a.m. because he was so nervous. The next morning, he and his dad got the tickets and went into the stadium to get ready for the Golly Whopper Games!

Carol, the person helping his team, told them all the rules of the game. They have to do five stunts to win. They all need to work together to figure these out. When they have done the first puzzle, they go on to breaking pinatas to get the next clue. The clue comes out and so does Carol. They get moving to the next stunt.

In the book “Sword of the Rightful King” Merlin is trying to convince Arthur that the “The Sword In The Stone” is a great idea, but Merlin will not just come right out and say how. This builds a very small type of suspense that keeps you bored and unexcited.
The characters are ever changing, or should I say, ever revealing. For three or so pages I have been reading, Merlin has been talking to an Oak tree. This is pretty useless because it has already told the reader the information that was supposed to be given on these pages, or at least we have already been given the gist of it.

Nicolina Boza: The Year the Swallows Came Early - pages 224-271 - August 4-6
I think it's nice how Eleanor's dad gave Mr. Tom a trailer for winning a card game when he should have or could have sold it to get money. I am glad Eleanor wished her dad came home. I also would have wanted to tell my mom if my dad had called from jail. Poor Eleanor just wanted to find the right time to tell her mom about the phone call when an earthquake hit. I think it's funny how every time Mama or Eleanor tried to talk about something important something occurs like Mama has to go to work, or Mama has to go meet somebody, or an earthquake. Eleanor finally gets to tell her mom that she got to talk to her dad on the phone. After they talk, they had scramble eggs, and Eleanor said that scrambled eggs will always remind her of that conversation. When I eat chocolate, I think of Abuelo. And when I eat churros, I think of Spain and dipping them in hot chocolate. I am glad that Eleanor's dad got out of jail and everything ended well.

Grace Mauldin - 6th grade. The Gollywhopper Games, pages 133-179, August 9, 2010. In this section of the book, the green team is more involved and into the game. The team is working hard to get the puzzles and stunts done to go to the next puzzle. They were successful on a few but they got one puzzle wrong. They had to do an extra stunt before they realized they got it wrong. They lost some time to the other team. It's interesting to me how all the characters react to all the pressure of the games. It brings out the best and the worst in everybody. It brings out the best because they're solving puzzles and working together. It brings out the worst because people become impatient and snap at each other. As I was reading the story, I became anxious myself.

Talia Williams 7 : In the book storyteller (by Edward Myers) there is a poor farm boy named Jack. I like this book because it seems really realistic like a person’s real life. It talks about how Jack goes to find a fortune and he winds up becoming the royal storyteller for the king. After he is anointed, he soon falls in love with Princess Stelinda the eldest daughter. Sadly, when they were about to be married the king died and his son became king. Unfortunately for the whole entire kingdom the prince was very young, foolish and wicked. He also banned commoners from marrying royal blood. This crushed Jack and Stelinda's plans for getting married! I like this the new king a little because he was fooled and finally thrown over. Every time I read this book I just laugh at his stupidity. In the end the king also ended up working for his life (ha, ha, ha) This was a great book!

Talia Williams 7 : The title of this book is Goose Girl. This book is historical fiction. It is about crown Princess Anidori Kiladra Talianna Isilee who lives in Kildenree. Some people in this book were given different powers. There is a power where you can talk to and understand animal language. There is also one where you can basically make people believe what you say. That one (with people) is called people – speaking. Well, Princess Ani’s Aunt had the gift of people – speaking. Fortunately she used it wisely. The queen was a very wicked mother. When she learned that Ani could speak to animals and understand them, she made sure that poor Ani could never go outside! Ani’s aunt still made sure that she got educated. When Ani’s father got home from a long journey, Ani and he went horseback riding. Unfortunately, Ani’s father tried to make a jump but his horse failed him. Sadly, in about a week Ani’s father died. I didn’t really like this book because Ani had way too many troubles in her life a princess. Really her life should have been easy!

Talia Williams 7 : The title of this book is Go Big or Go Home. I really liked tonight’s reading. The main character is Brady. He has a dad that likes to travel. At night during a meteor shower, it just so happens that a meteor falls through the roof of his house, right onto his bed! He invites his cousin Quinn to come over the next day. They name the space rock Fred, (Far Roaming Earth Diver). While Brady was sleeping he held the space rock and drooled all over it. When his cousin came over the next day, Quinn insisted that they take it to a lab. They got their bikes, got a couple of sandwiches and hit the over 2 mile hike to the lab. Suddenly something weird happened to Brady and easily left Quinn in the dust which never happened before. He also easily hiked up a hill that normally took him for ever. To top that he did a complete 360 degree flip over an angry bull. Everything that Brady was doing seemed super-human. This book seems very exciting so far.

Grace Mauldin - 6th grade. The Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman. August 11, 2010. I finished the rest of the book and I loved it. The Green team wins and Gil and his teammates get to celebrate before they compete against each other. One by one they get eliminated. Gil gets eliminated but then the people at Gollywop discover that Rocky has cheated so everybody gets a second chance. Gil won! He and his family were so happy but that wasn't all. Bert Golliwop escorted them into his office and told them he knows that his dad didn't steal the money from the company. He explained that Rocky's dad set him up as a practical joke but it wasn't a joke at all. Rocky's dad was mad that Gil's dad had been promoted over him. Gil was so happy and decided that he didn't want to move away. This was a very interesting and exciting book. It was hard to put it down. I hope you get a chance to read it.

Nicolina Boza: Are you There God, It's Me Margaret - June 17-19 - pages 69-149

I wish I was a boy, because boys don't have to go through girl drama. Boys don't have the pressure that girls have. I liked this book a lot. Normally books don't get me hooked on the first page, but this one did. I can't imagine my friends and I talking about this kind of stuff. It's so girly, and I'm not very girly. I thought the part about the party was okay. They played spin-the-bottle. They also played other kissing games. I don't think I would want to go to a party like that. This book was very different from all the other books I've read by Judy Blume. Normally her books are funny, but this one was girly. I'm glad things ended well for Margaret. She was very worried, and I felt sorry for her.I'm sure if Judy Blume wrote a second book about Margaret, she would be very happy where she was, would have a lot more friends, would get things worked out with her mom's parents, and her grandma would come see her a lot.
