The past week, on my summer vacation to Tulum, Mexico, I read book one of The Ranger’s Apprentice series, The Ruins of Gorlan, by John Flanagan. This was a very good book. It taught me that practice makes perfect because when Will becomes a Ranger’s Apprentice, His master Halt makes him practice archery and stealth nonstop for three months. Even though Will doesn’t think so much practice will help, he does it and he gets very good at it.
I like how the author showed the progressing friendship between Will and Horace. At the beginning of the story, Will and Horace aren’t friends and they are always arguing over who is stronger and who is a better fighter. After a few months of training with their masters, the group of friends meet up to talk. Will and Horace end up getting in a big fight. They are mad at each other for a while, until Will and Horace both get chosen to come on a boar hunt with some castle guards. They become friends when Will saves Horace’s life from a charging bull. At the end of the story, Will and Horace end up as good friends.
The Ranger’s Apprentice book one, The Ruins of Gorlan is an excellent book filled with action, suspense and adventure. I would recommend it to anyone who loves sci-fi/fantasy books and likes action and adventure.

Thanks, Trent!
Speaking of fantasy (not usually my favorite genre) I am reading the 1st Harry Potter with my 7 year old daughter this summer! Can you believe I'm a librarian and have somehow avoided reading Harry Potter for years? BUT, I LOVE IT!
Maybe I'll read The Ranger's Apprentice series after I finished our Harry Potter adventure.
I can't wait to hear more from you!
That's crazy, Ms. Hinger, i can't believe you havent read harry potter! Do you have any suggestions for my second summer reading book?
-Trent S.
The first book I read over summer vacation is Mockingbird, by Kathryn Erskine. I absolutly loved this book. It helped me see others perspective on life. Before I read this book I found it hard to put myself in the same situation as other people that don't think the same way as me. I now understand how hard it is for some people to be saying something and the person who they are talking to have no idea what they are talking about.
I felt that when the author was explaining what happened to Devon (Catlin's brother) it was depressing.I felt sad when the author explained how Catlin did not understand when people where trying to explain that he wasn't with her anymore. I also thought it was sad that she was trying to heal and no one would help her because they didn't understand her needs.
Even though at parts the book got deppressing, all in all i would recommend this book to someone looking for a good read because i felt like i was involved in the story and it kept me hooked.

I knew you guys would give me a hard time about not reading Harry Potter yet. :) Try Terry Pratchett's book Nation if you haven't already read it.

I recently read a book titled Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, by Gabrielle Zevin. At the beginning of the book I felt as though I would not like it because of the scenario that occurred. A girl named Naomi becomes an amnesiac and cannot remember anything past the point of sixth grade. Although at the beginning I was not convinced that I was going to like this book, I finished it and was glad that I did. After reading this book I realized that even when you feel like you are being mistreated under certain circumstances, there is always someone out there that has it worse than you.
I liked that the author wrote the book in a way that let the character express all of her feelings to the reader. It made me feel like I was the person who was the amnesiac. I didn’t like, however, how the author sometimes dragged on about a certain subject that was not at all related to the topic of the story.
Overall I would say that this book was a good read even though in some parts I was not exactly “hooked.” I would recommend this book to other people because it carries a good life lesson.
I read the book Everlost by Neal Shusterman. The book is about what happens to people who do not reach the light at the end of the tunnel when they die. This in-between place is called “Everlost”, where you are not dead, yet you are not alive. Strangely, there are no adults in Everlost, only children. I wonder why adults always reach the light, never getting bumped out of the way, or being not allowed through. Maybe it is because adults have gotten their fair share of life, and children have not.
One of the reasons I like this book is because it’s fantasy, and in fantasy, anything can happen, an example being in the real world, there is little chance that you might sink into the center of the earth if you stood in one spot too long. Neal Shusterman was so descriptive that I felt as though I was right beside Allie when she faced the evil Mc Gill, and helping Nick to discover the secret of the coins.
Everlost will have you hooked from start to finish, and you need to read the second and the third books in this amazing series. This is a wonderful book that everybody should try to read if they have not yet done so.

Once i start a book that looks intresting, I want to read more. I read book two of the Percy Jackson series, The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan, it shows friendship, kindness, and doubt about a person. Percy has a dream about his friend Grover who is in troble. Grover is on a mission to find the lost god of the wild but gets into a "sticky" situation and needs Percy's help. But when Percy gets to camp with his new friend from school its nothing but troble. He finds out a new secret about his family, what could it be, a happy ending or not so great?
When Percy suggest a quest to help Grover his worst enemy gets it, so Percy and his friens have to try to find a way to help Grover before its to late.
When I read this book I fell in love, it helped me realize that even if people are diffent than you they can still help you in many things you cant do on your own. and maybe find a new friendship along the way.
Once I find a book that is intresting I want to read more. I read the second book in the Percy Jackson series, The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan, and loved it. Sorry I didn't press the u in trouble and the d in friends and I accidentally put a period on the last sentence.:(
Sorry I didn't press the u in trouble, the d in friends, didn't capitalize the first I, and i accidentally put a period on the last sentence.
In the book The Night Tourist, the author, Katherine Marsh, will have you captured in the first paragraph. Jack Perdu gets run over by a car, but survives. Mostly. When his picture is taken, he looks overexposed, and he sees ghosts everywhere in New York. Anyhow, he finds a golden subway token and accidently uses it to get into the New York Underworld, even though he’s still alive. Mostly. He meets Euri (dead) and she tells him “if you’re alive, you must only stay three days and three nights, or you’ll be dead like everyone else here.”
In this book, ghosts can fly, but not over water. I always wonder about that, because it means no ghosts can leave the island of Manhattan. Although they might be able to take a train or car… Ghosts can walk trough solid objects, but they can’t change the clothes they died in. Sorry shopaholics! Ghosts can haunt, but you won’t notice unless the ghost is a poltergeist, of which there are very few (thank goodness). For the ghosts of New York, the fastest way to travel is by fountain. Yes, I said fountain. You enter one, get sucked through a wind tunnel, and you’re at the fountain of your choice. I haven’t quite figured out how…
“How do you get OUT of the Underworld?” you ask. Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron is a touching, fun, heartwarming book. I thought this book was a great book that tried to explain the reason that we’re here for. The rambunctious golden retriever puppy, Bailey, is reborn four times throughout the book, each time as a different type of dog, and each time, to serve a certain purpose. This book taught me that everyone on the earth serves a purpose, no matter how big or small. The first time Bailey was born was as a stray mutt. His purpose was to be that dog and try and find a home. He succeeded, but sadly lived a short life.
The second time, his purpose was to be Bailey, eight year-old Ethan’s dog. This was the longest and most touching part of the book. Bailey lives with Ethan his whole life until he gets a sickness of some sort, and dies of age. Bailey is then reborn as a female German Shepard police dog. His purpose in this part is to be a field police dog that sniffs out bodies, criminals, or any people trapped somewhere. He died later while alone on a mission of thirst and heat.
The final time, he is reborn again in Ethan’s world. Bailey finds him and he is much, much older. Bailey lives with him, but Ethan doesn’t know it’s the real Bailey. Bailey lives with him when he marries, and Ethan dies of age at the end. Bailey knew what his purpose was now, and that was to be with Ethan, and he had succeeded.
I liked everything about this book, it was definitely thought through very well, and I wouldn’t want to change any of it.I greatly recommend this book to all dog lovers or owners!

The book Guardians of Ga’Hoole, The Capture is a great, action-packed start to the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series. It’s definitely a book about the fight between dark and light sides. The book starts out with Soren, a barn owl is living with his parents, his brother, Kludd, and his baby sister, Eglantine. Soren is pushed out of their nest high up in a tree in the Kingdom of Tyto, and is stranded on the ground, not able to fly. There are many dangers there, and, to his surprise, an evil owl working for St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls captures Soren, and he is taken to a horrible place that will supposedly make them better owls.
St. Aggies is an evil place that captures baby owls and is planning to take over the whole owl kingdom. Soren meets a little elf owl named Gylfie, and they become friends, trying to escape from St. Aggies. They come up with many plans, then finally figure out Grimble, a owl that acts like he’s evil, but really wants to help the owls, helps them escape by teaching them to fly. They escape quickly when another owl finds out. They fly until they land on an island. They meet two other owls, and start traveling with them.
I liked mostly everything about this book. The only thing I didn’t like was that it got kind of boring in the middle because Gylfie and Soren were trapped at St. Aggies for nearly the whole book. But, with that aside, the book was great and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

The Other Side of the Island
By:Allegra Goodman
Early on in reading The Other Side of the Island I became hooked. While reading I felt as though I was with main charter. The author made it clear for me to understand how Honor felt with parents who “didn’t fit” as the government called those who didn’t believe in the Earth Mother’s plans and ways and did as they wanted. Honor finds out later that those who do not fit disappear. Honor loves her parents but can’t understand their ways. When I put myself in Honor’s position I feel conflicted because she has parents who tell her one opinion on Earth Mother and a school that tells her the polar opposite.
Honor also has to live in a fake environment with fake sunsets and sunrises, without animals and with fake stars and fake storms. All are controlled by Earth Mother. I can’t imagine having to live in a world like this because of my love and passion for nature and its beauty.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants a fast-paced, futuristic fantasy.

I just read the book Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper. This book let me realize how cerebral palsy works and how it negatively and positively affects the patients.
This book is about treating all people equally. There is a disabled child, Melody, who experiences being made fun of because of having cerebral palsy. A lot of people can look at a child that cannot speak or move easily and just think that they are stupid because of how they look. This is not the case with most disabled people including Melody. They are actually incredibly smart.
Because of the fact that Melody explains how she feels so deeply and descriptively, I was able to realize that everyone is the same no matter what their appearance is or how well their brain or other body parts work. Overall I would say that this is a great book. It taught me a good life lesson that I will always remember: Don’t judge a person by their appearance.

This summer I read the Percy Jackson series, and one book that really got my attention was the last book: The Last Olympian. It caught my attention because it shows courage and trust in a person, and even though they have done some bad things in the past they always do the right thing in the end.
Percy has to make a hard choice in the end, it's for his destiny and someones elses to. In the battle of a lifetime, Percy tries his hardest for the lives of everyone.
When I read this book it taught me a leeson, on how to still trust someone in the darkest hour, and know they will do the right thing in the end if you know them just right. And hey you might come out with the greatest victory in the world, friendship.
Yesterday, I was reading ahead for the reading bowl, and I finished the book Dying To Meet You, by Kate Klise. It was not an ordinary book, because the entire novel was written in letters. Instead of normal dialogue, the communication between characters was expressed through the letters that they wrote to each other. I thought this helped to express the actual feelings of the characters, because it seemed as if the book was actually written by the characters themselves.
Another aspect of this novel that I was really impressed by was the description of the setting and the adjectives used to describe the book. The book took place in a large, old mansion, but Klise used some much better adjectives than the ones I did. I thought the amazing description of the novel really influenced the story, and helped me perceive what was happening.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading the novel Dying To Meet You. I liked the way the author shook things up a bit and changed the way the story was written to letters instead of normal text. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a spooky read.
Another book I read on the reading bowl list was Scat, by Carl Hiassan. This book was a mystery that was thrilling, creepy, and hilarious all at the same time. The funny parts included a 12 year old boy eating a pencil out of a teacher's hand and an arsonist gluing a man to a tree as a punishment.
This novel was also very scary at parts, like when a teacher was caught in a wildfire, a boy falls from a tree, and when that same boy's dad loses his arm in the war. However the book was always interesting and I was very reluctant to put it down at times.
The novel Scat was very intriguing, and I thought it had a great blend of humor and spookiness. I think it would be a great read for kids of all ages who like all sorts of books
ok so the 2end book i read was the book all the broken pieces. a novel by Ann E. Burg. it was a very interesting book i really like it. it was a sad book for me but still very interesting i dont really like reading but this book made it worth it so i may read more of Ann E. Burg's books!!!!
The second book i read this sumer was 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass. I really liked this book because it kept me engaged, and i wanted to read more. It taught me that you should value your friendship with another person.
Next, I really like this book because I liked the style of writing the author chose. I also liked this book because I loved the way the authors way of describing what happened, it made me feel like I was standing righ next to the characters. I loved this book and would recomend it for someone looking for a good read.
For my second response, I responded to the second book in the Ranger's Apprentice series: The Burning Bridge, by John Flannagan. this book was pretty good. It was for sure better that the first one though. In The Burning Bridge, Gilan Horace, and Will get sent on a mission to get a message from Celtica. when they get there they are really confused because the whole town is deserted.
Throughout the book Will is challenged to overcome his fear of Wargals. At the beginning of the book Will encounters a party of Wargals. He getts so scared that he freezes and he almost dies. By the end, Will overcomes his fears and rakes down a bunch of wargals by himself.
Overall this was a very good book, there were times when i couldn't put it down. It had lots of suspense and action and i really liked it.
This summer I read the book scat, by Carl Hiaasen. This was a very unique book in the sense that it was not only a mystery novel, but also one about the environment. Many of the characters are very different from how the beginning of the book describes them.
For instance, Duane "Smoke" Scrod JR. is originally thought to be an arsonist and an insolent to his superiors, but in the end, you discover that he is kind, and cares about nature, instead of the criminal you are led to believe he is in the beginning of the book. The teacher, MS. Starch, is thought to be branded with the mark of the devil, but instead, is also kind and caring, if a little strict.
All and all, this book is excellent, and I think, covers important topics in an interesting way.
Another interesting book I read this summer was After Ever After By: Jordan Sonnenblick. This book, I must admit, kind of caught me off guard. I was expecting a more of a happy book; Happily ever after, little red riding hood, fairy godmother, ect. Instead, there was a serious book about Cancer and the aftereffects of it. Even with such an unhappy topic, the book, laced with sarcasm, actually made me laugh out loud.
The main theme of the book, was that two cancer survivors, best friends Tad and Jeffery, trying to survive eighth grade. Jeffery cant lift his foot properly, due to radiation, and tad is confined to a wheelchair. They are helping each other, Tad is Helping Jeffery by tutoring him so he can pass an exam that will get him to high school if he passes, and stick him back in middle school if he fails.
Jeffery is helping tad walk, so that he can walk across the stage for eighth grade graduation.
Even though the beginning and middle were great,I for one, was very, very disappointed with the ending, I am not going to offer any spoilers, but if you are going to read this book, then be prepared. Even though the ending was, unsatisfying, I still give this book 4.5 stars and would recommend it to almost anyone.

The book, The Last Book in the Universe was a book that made you feel sympathy for all the characters, but for very reasons. The main character in the book had many different struggles. The majority of his problems are related back to the fact that he has seizures. Although this book is set in the future, the poor, like the main character, are unable to use any medication. I can understand how courageous he is when he awakes from a seizure and is being laughed at and taunted by others and shouting Spaz, which is what they call him. I get the feeling from the author that he is very strong in what he believes in and what he thinks should happen.
The author later introduces a character who makes me think about how hard it would be without books as it is in Spaz’s time. I cant imagine a world without books and words which are only spoken and not written down, due to my love of poems and books. This book was a very well written futuristic but not to impossible novel that I would definitely recommend.
Nicolina Boza - Chamber of Secrets by J K Rowling was an amazing book. After hearing my siblings go on and on about these books, I just had to read them. This book did not disappoint me. It had action going all the time and plenty of mysteries to solve. I was never bored.
Harry's character is so adventurous. He is exactly who most teens want to be like. He is not afraid of danger and isn't afraid to step away from the norms.
My favorite part was when Harry saves Ginny from Voldemort and afterwards saves Dobey from a house elf. Harry is the only one who is even brave enough to say Voldemort's name. I would have been so scared and probably would have run, but Harry just puts himself out there and does what needs to be done.
Nicolina Boza - I also read Prisoner of Azkaban, also by J K Rowling. This book also had mysteries and lots of people saving, but it was different because someone was after Harry. Again, he is not afraid. He puts himself in danger. Of course, Harry is lucky because he has two best friends who always stick by his side no matter how crazy they think he is. They don't want to see him get hurt.
My favorite part is when he and Hermione save Sirius Black and Buckbeak all in one night. He had to be very strategic and courageous. He didn't have a lot of time and could not be seen. That part was very suspenseful, and I couldn't put down the book.
I don't know why it took my so long to begin this series. It is very addicting. I plan to finish them all.
